The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) is responsible for providing professional occupational therapy assistance and coordinates patient health care services in conjunction with a licensed Occupational Therapist to ensure a safe environment and in accordance with State, and Federal and Home Health policies and procedures. Provides supervisory support to ensure effective and efficient operations of departmental services.


The COTA must be able to bend at the waist, stand, sit and push. Must have good vision, and hearing. Must possess good written and communication skills to deal with the public and hospital physicians and staff.


1. Provides treatment as directed by the staff Occupational Therapist. Adheres to standards of occupational medicine practice.

2. Observes and evaluated treatment affect. Discusses observations with staff Occupational Therapist.

3. Performs components of an appropriate assessment on each patient, as related to the therapy requested and provided and reassessments as per policy. This includes patients on the following services, i.e., Med/Surg/Telemetry, Long Term Care, Home Health and outpatients.

4. Assists with the formulation of a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and assesses effectiveness of learning; family is include in teaching as appropriate. Staff Occupational Therapist is advised of conclusions.

5. Demonstrates knowledge of occupational therapy modalities.

6. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.

7. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Maintains departmental cleanliness and safety.

8. Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.

9. Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, facility staff and members of the department.

10. Coordinates and assists with directing patient care to ensure patients’ needs are met and facility policy is followed.

11. Records treatment/service revisions in accordance with department policy.

12. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

13. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.

14. Consults other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.

15. Participates in performance improvement activities for the department and organizational QA activities.

16. Meets current documentation standards per policies, on a daily basis.

17. Participates in educational staff performance improvement in-services. Assists with orientation and in-service training for certified department staff members. Participates in guidance and education programs.

18. Assists in ordering supplies, maintains adequate levels to assure all supplies and equipment is readily available.

19. Provides input in formulating budget, assists in evaluating department performance versus budget controls and takes appropriate action to remain within budget guidelines.

20. Participates in all infection control, departmental equipment training and organizational safety and fire safety programs.


Professional Requirements:

1. Adheres to hospital dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
2. Completes annual continuing education requirements.
3. Maintains regulatory requirements, including state and federal regulations and standards.
4. Reports to work on time and as schedules. Completes work within designated time.
5. Wears identification while on duty.
6. Completes in-services and returns in timely fashion.
7. Attends committee meetings, as appropriate.

Regulatory Requirements:

1. AA. Degree in Occupational Therapy from a school or college approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association.
2. Current state licensure as COTA.
3. Current BLS (CPR) certification

Language Skills:

1. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
2. Additional languages preferred.
3. Strong written and verbal skills.

Other Skills:

1. Basic computer skills.
2. Knowledge of physical medicine, occupational therapy modalities, anatomy and physiology.
3. Knowledge of physical and occupational therapy machine operation, maintenance and repairs of same.
4. Ability to maintain control and respond calmly and positively during crisis situations, i.e., Code Blue.
